Aeronca Champ - Air to Air

Home for the Holidays

Air to air photography is one of my favorite jobs/arts but also one of the more challenging ones due its inherent risks, coordination, and skill required to safely perform the work AND get the photos. When I was asked to photograph a beautiful red & white Aeronca 7AC Champ, I jumped at the opportunity to fly! Some background: Air to air work is, by definition, formation flying. While the FAA defines the basic ground rules for formation flying in FAR Part 91, many of us believe it to be rather prudent to go above and beyond the basics so as to avoid becoming a headline in the local news. That said, we spend time working with the flight crew going over procedures, emergency procedures, ...

Home for the Holidays

In late 2013 we got a call from the City of Fort Worth, Texas asking about providing vertical photography of the Spinks Airport and Meacham Airport. While we've shot numerous vertical images in the past, they've always been relatively small/contained properties. But in this case, both airports would require a field of view of more than 13,000ft x 8,000ft...something our equipment couldn't handle. What to do?After running the numbers and making a few phone calls, we paired up with a local company which operates a commercial Cessna T210 Centurion, which sports a retractable landing gear, no wing strut, and a big engine. This new aircraft would allow us a wonderful field of view and ...

Christmas Gift on the Ranch

Home for the Holidays

Twas the night before Christmas...not quiet but almost...when the Thornburg family called in need of a special gift for Christmas: An aerial photograph of their family ranch!Their concern, however, was that the Christmas party was right around the corner and they weren't sure that the job could be done in time.So we chatted for about 30 minutes and worked through the details of the location, products needed, and pricing. All was looking good to book the flight...except for the ranch. It turns out that all of the leaves had already fallen and the ranch looked rather bare. What to do? There's only one thing to do...take advantage of what we've got on the ground and in the sky! Most aerial ...

Home for the Holidays

This year, we kicked off our Friday Night Lights aerial photography with a great local school, Castleberry High School, located in River Oaks, Texas on the northwest side of Fort Worth. Athletic Director Lenny Lasher called and said that the Lions' had recently finished a complete rennovation of their WO Barnes Football Stadium and wanted a new set of aerial photos taken. In 2011 we provided a set of aerials of their previous stadium, so this would be a great opportunity to showcase & compare the old & the new!Our fly date was set for the Homecoming gave on September 13, 2013. Ideally, we want to photograph the stadiums around mid-second quarter to allow as many fans to be seated as ...

Home for the Holidays

In min-August a genleman from Honda Cars of McKinney called with an urgent request...they were updating their website and needed an aerial photo taken of the night. The problem was that they had already hired (spent money on) another photographer and were not pleased with the results. Upon reviewing the image, it was clear that there was too much vibration/camera movement in the image, caused by too slow of shutter speed without stabilization. In all fairness, the other photographer did a decent job, but he was pushing his equipment and skill to their limits, and it showed just enough to not be as clean of an image as was required. That said, Honda Cars of McKinney was a bit ...
